How does the Tesla flying car work?
Two systems do the trick. Fans under the car pull air out from beneath it, which presses it onto the road hard enough to drive up a curved wall and even hang upside down. Then compressed-gas thrusters, developed with SpaceX engineers, push the car off the wall, rotate it and slow its landing. It is a short powered jump, not sustained flight like a plane or a drone.

The suction fans: why it can drive upside down
Tesla describes a "multi-mode" fan and ground-sealing system that pulls air from under the car to create downforce, enough to hold it upside down even when stationary (Engadget). That is how the prototype climbed the near-vertical white wall at the 15 October 2026 unveiling and paused at the top.
Race cars have used the same idea before: a fan that sucks the car onto the track instead of relying only on wings.
The cold-gas thrusters: the jump and the flip
Cold-gas thrusters release stored high-pressure gas through nozzles. There is no fire and no fuel burn, which is why the plumes look like white-blue jets rather than rocket flames. Musk spoke of "ultra high-pressure air tanks" and 10 nozzles at the event (Tech Insider); Tesla says the gas is stored in carbon-fiber pressure vessels that fill every spare space, and more gas means more "flight time" (Electrek).
In the demo the thrusters did three jobs: push the car off the top of the wall, rotate it in the air, and cushion the landing in a cloud of white and pink smoke.

Questions people ask
Does the Tesla Roadster really fly?
It jumps and flips for a few seconds on cold-gas thrusters. It does not take off and cruise like an aircraft.
What gas do the thrusters use?
Tesla and Musk described compressed air in high-pressure tanks. No tank size or pressure has been published.
Was a person inside during the stunt?
No. Musk said there was nobody on board for safety; an Optimus robot sat in the driver seat for the show.
How long can it stay in the air?
Tesla has not said. The demo showed one short jump per run.
